California State Library - Digital Stories Station

Sara Smith-Rubio at Soil Born Farmspremier-poster.jpg Kinetic Creative Studio recently completed a three month project with the Sacramento Public Library and the California State Library. Contracted as a Multimedia Consultant, Karl Alexander produced a series of ten mini-documentaries about local Sacramentans, designed multimedia training materials and led a series of public workshops on the art and technology of digital storytelling.

This project was a part of a larger state program designed to put the knowledge and tools for digital storytelling into the hands of the community. The goal is to create an audio-visual tapestry of California living called "California of the Past."

Using Apple's iLife '09 suite of tools, residents can tell short stories of their personal experiences, family histories, places of interest or anything about life in Sacramento that is important to them. These stories are preserved in the archives of the Sacramento Room, posted on the library's website, and are available for checkout from the audio visual collection.

We were excited to see the community's response to the workshops and the popularity of the stories online and through the circulation desk. The Digital Story Station project will continue at Central Library, downtown on 8th and I Street, and anyone interested in telling a story should contact one of the Digital Media Artists on staff by filling out an online application.

A free premier screening of the most recent mini-documentaries will be presented in the Galleria East Meeting Hall as a part of the August 2nd Saturday Art Walk, August 8th, from 3-5pm. After that date they will be viewable at kineticillusions.com , planetsacramento.tv , and saclibray.org , as well as for checkout at Central Public Library.

Check back soon for the official Screening Announcement, and thanks to everyone who contributed their stories for this projet.
